Poland is one of the largest European markets for heavy transport, but among 30,000 vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 tonnes registered in Poland in 2021 were zero-emission units – according to the latest report of the Polish Alternative Fuels Association, presented during the last day of the New Mobility Congress in Łódź.

The last day of the New Mobility Congress was dominated by the challenges facing the heavy transport sector, discussions on the hydrogen and alternative fuels market, the electric bicycle market, as well as debates on the education of specialized personnel for the e-mobility industry. The first year of the “My Electrician” program was also summarized.

The development of the e-mobility sector in Poland is supported by financial incentive mechanisms. They include the “My Electrician” subsidy program for the leasing of electric vehicles, worth approximately EUR 147 million, and subsidies of approximately EUR 183 million, for infrastructure for charging electric vehicles and refueling hydrogen.

Ireneusz Zyska, secretary of state in the Ministry of Climate and Environment, government plenipotentiary for renewable energy sources, pointed out that the Act on Electromobility and Alternative Fuels, inter alia, introduced, among others excise duty exemption and increased depreciation limit for electric vehicles to the amount of PLN 225 thousand zloty.

“Additionally, the amendment to the act reduced the depreciation of vehicles with an internal combustion engine to the amount of PLN 100,000. zloty. This makes the purchase of electric cars more profitable for entrepreneurs, ”he added.

According to experts, the most difficult challenges are faced by the heavy transport sector. In 2021, the truck park in Poland numbered almost 1.2 million cars, and Polish companies are responsible for over 25 percent. all transports in the EU. 98 percent However, trucks are diesel vehicles and their average age is 12 years.

Costs are an obstacle to the transformation of heavy transport. The price of an electric truck is still on average three times higher than that of a combustion engine tractor unit. In the case of a hydrogen-powered truck, the cost is five times higher.

Some companies, however, are already deciding to replace their fleet. Volvo Trucks, IKEA Industry and Raben Group have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of zero-emission transport of goods. Under the contract, IKEA will introduce Volvo FM electric trucks, which will run between IKEA factories in Zbąszynek and Babimost. The logistics operator is Raben Group.

The trucks will be loaded at IKEA Industry’s production plants with electricity generated from renewable energy. The first electric truck with a 24-tonne semi-trailer will start operating in the fall of 2022, but there are plans to expand the fleet with more vehicles.

Per Olof Arnäs, director of logistics strategy at Einride, pointed out that today’s heavy transport, responsible for 7 percent. of global CO2 emissions, it is unsustainable, harmful to the environment and ineffective.

“What we do today has an impact on tomorrow. You need to reduce emissions, improve operating costs and increase the productivity of the fleet, but in such a way as to embrace the entire complexity of the system and in such a way that it does not affect the profitability of the business “- he noted.

Einride has created an intelligent, Einride Saga logistics platform that coordinates all elements of the transport ecosystem, which manages a fleet of autonomous vehicles on the routes applied.

“We want to cooperate with the best and most technologically advanced companies, accelerating the transformation in the automotive industry towards zero-emission solutions, but we particularly care about the increase in the share of local content in this sector” – emphasized Ireneusz Zyska.

According to experts, alternative fuels are necessary to achieve the objectives of the energy transformation of transport, and green hydrogen will be used for this purpose the fastest. However, despite the fact that regulations have already been defined in Poland for all hydrogen refueling stations – including watercraft refueling stations, which are not yet covered by the EU legislation – there are still no developed technical standards.

Another problem is the power needed to produce hydrogen, which should come from renewable energy sources.

“Out of 900 TWh of energy consumed by the Polish economy today, 588 TWh comes from fossil fuels. Decarbonization is that 100% of the energy should come from. from renewable sources. Meanwhile, the renewable energy sources already present on the energy market cannot be used to generate hydrogen – there is a regulatory ban which means that the hydrogen production capacity must be new, ”explained Tomoho Umeda, CEO of Hynfra.

Tomoho Umeda pointed out that EU certification systems for renewable hydrogen sources already exist – voluntary for now, but will become mandatory sooner than the first large-scale electrolysis plant in the EU is built.

On the third day of the congress, issues related to the market of electric bicycles, treated as a priority in the transport mix under the assumptions of the New Urban Transport of the EU, were also discussed.

“An electric bike means ‘further, faster, cheaper.’ The e-bike market is 22 million units sold in the EU, including 1.1 million in Poland. In 2030, there will be 30 million of them. 16 million units – 80 percent. Were produced in the EU, including 900 thousand. in Poland. The bicycle industry generates 85,000 jobs jobs in production, another 170 thousand. in related industries and a further 200,000 in the sales network ”- said Moreno Fioravanti, president of the European Bicycle Manufacturers Association.

Maciej Mazur, director of the Polish Alternative Fuels Association, announced at the end of the congress the opening of the New Mobliność postgraduate course at the Faculty of Automobiles and Working Machines of the Warsaw University of Technology. Studies start in 2023.

“The aim of these studies is to respond to the expectations of the labor market, where there is a shortage of specialized staff, but in order for the product to be of high quality, we selected the subject matter in terms of practice, together with representatives of the electromobility industry,” said Maciej Mazur.

The New Mobility Congress – an event that connects buyers and sellers in the entire value chain of sustainable and zero-emission transport, was held on September 12-14, 2022 in Łódź.
